#59 IT’S IN THE DETAILS

Don’t you like it when you are in a store and you see something that you know you are going to like from two aisles away?

You hold it up.

You turn it around, and it gets even better.

There is a detail you were not expecting.

Small.

Discreet.

Ingenious.

It is the completion you never knew it required.

It immediately becomes something better.

You wonder at what stage in the design process it was at, when someone said, ‘You know what would be cool?’

I love a detail.

It is a little gift.

A gift that should be shared.

You are buying it because of that detail.

You saw it and loved it.

You want others to see and love it.

You want people to think, ‘Dam, where did he find that?’

You did not buy it to show it off.

But you did buy it to let others see it.

Is that not the reason for the little detail?

For it to be seen?

To show it off?

‘Look what I found.’

‘Check this out,’ kind of thing.

I have a few favourites.

A beige pair of shorts with a light blue zipper pull tab.

A button-down shirt with the middle button black.

A Polo that has one stripe that does not match up.

A hoodie that has no hood and a zippered pouch.

Some designers are known for their little detail.

A little detail that, once you see it, you know it is theirs.

Paul Smith immediately comes to mind.

I am fascinated by this type of thing.

The idea that you can come up with a detail, a detail, that is all.

You put that detail on a piece of your clothing, and it says it is yours.

No signature.

No name.

No logo.

WOW!

I think if you are a designer, this must be the most satisfying thing there is.

I love details.

They are the spice of fashion.

 A cool collar.

A neon zipper.

The simple placement of your logo.
