I get frustrated with the ‘Cycling World.’
This is not something new.
You have read some of my posts.
I have been this way for years.
I am trying to think of a better way to say ‘frustrated.’
I mean, I am, but it is more than that.
Bored.
It is just such a wonderful sport, and yet it does a poor job marketing itself.
The companies that make the bikes.
The companies that make the clothes.
The companies that make the parts.
The cyclists.
It is all so mundane.
The launches are all the same.
The advertisements are all the same.
I have a benchmark to compare it to.
Skateboarding.
Anything that is fun, cool, extreme, worn, created, or sung has some route in it.
Great musicians.
Great artists.
Great fashion.
Great designers.
Great authors.
They all have routes in Skateboarding.
Cyclists disappear into obscurity.
Not skateboarders.
They use skateboarding as their launching pad.
The place where they have made a name for themselves.
Their own style.
Their own technique.
Their own outlook.
Skateboarding encourages individuality.
Cycling does not encourage this.
It encourages conformity.
I was riding the other day and bumped into a friend.
We both slowed down and rode side by side and talked.
I love it when this happens.
Talk we did.
He is a Great guy.
Great with a capital ‘G.’
An amazing cyclist.
Toured the world.
Has a store.
You get it.
He is in the process of doing something.
Launching something new.
He has cycled all his life.
I am relatively new.
I came from a different life, a different sport.
He asked me, ‘What do I think?’
I did not go into detail.
I did not have to.
In fact, I could have simply said that ‘cycling is stuck.’
I told him, if you want to see what others are doing and doing incredibly well, you have to look outside the world of cycling. That cycling is where it is because it just looks in on itself to see what is ‘going on.’
