GOOD WITH YOURSELF

Every night I climb into bed, I make four ‘Asks.’

#1 ‘Hey Google, what time is it?’

#2 ‘Hey Google, set the alarm for 6:45.

#3 ‘Hey Google, what is the weather tomorrow in Montreal?’

I save my favourite for last.

It is the one I ponder as I fall to sleep.

It helps me take my mind off anything that may be on it.

#4 ‘Hey Google, give me a quote of inspiration.’

Off she goes.

They are always no more than a couple of sentences.

Mother Theresa.

Ghandi.

Muhammad Ali.

The ‘Biggies.’

I stay perfectly still so I can hear every word.

I say it again so that I can remember it in the morning.

I heard a good one the other night.

Ralph Nader.

‘The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.’

It stuck.

I went over and over it in my head.

I mean, it is not complicated.

The thing that I kept coming back to in my head was ‘followers.’

Today, when you hear ‘followers,’ you automatically think Instagram.

I like Instagram, I have fun on it, find some interesting things.

But deep down, I think that this is my issue with it.

It is all about following.

I am not going to say I am a leader.

I am not going to say I am a follower.

I do not do either.

I am just me.

I think that is why I ride alone.

No one to lead.

No one to follow.

Just me.

Left.

Right.

Stop.

Turn.

I think that is okay, is it not?

‘Good with yourself.’
