#5 #SHORTS

It is time to talk about shorts.

One specific pair.

The navy-blue ones from the LEAVING IT ON post.

I will be back at https://www.jlindeberg.com/ in posts to come.

I have a thing for shorts.

I used to have a drawer full of them.

It got hard to close.

I donated two-thirds of them.

I was only wearing a select few.

Four of those select few are from the same company.

HUGO BOSS

I had to say it in caps, because that is what HUGO BOSS does.

I have a bit of a problem with that.

Too much HUGO BOSS.

I know I should not start by discussing the logo size, but HUGO BOSS has this problem with making really really nice stuff and then slamming it with the huge HUGO BOSS logo.

I have always avoided them for this reason.

I prefer ‘if you know, you know.’

These shorts surprised me.

I did not know the logo was there.

It is very subtle, small, and a slightly different colour.

I first came across these shorts a few years ago.

I knew I would love them from two aisles away.

I did not bother trying them on.

I knew by looking, the fit would be nice.

It was better than nice.

HUGO BOSS tinkers with the back pockets every season.

I have two pairs with zippered pockets on the sides and two pairs with double back pockets.

Besides that, they are identical.

But here is the thing, no matter what they do with the pockets, I live in these shorts. I have them in four colours. Two are going into their third season, but they look and feel like their first. To ride with these shorts on is everything. When you get on your bike, they ride up ever so slightly on your thigh, then stay there, like stay there, stay there. No fidgeting at all. The tapered fit is in all the right spots. They have a slim fit with zero ‘grabbing’ in the crotch. They are made from a ‘Water-Repellent Technical Twill’ with ‘Moisture Wicking.’ I don’t want to throw tech jargon from their site around. Water repellent is self-explanatory. Twill is a particular weave of threads that makes it durable. What this fabric does is whisk the sweat away from your skin, and let it evaporate. The shorts have a well-designed waistband with built-in stretch.  It is the snug, comfortable fit around the waist you want. It also works to keep your Polo tucked in comfortably. The waist closes with a snap or a button, both durably applied. Alongside the snap, there is also a matching coloured drawstring. It runs through the inside waistband. The order is to tie the drawstring, pull up the zipper, and snap the button. I understand the fit they are going for, but it does not work with the drawstring. On my first ride wearing them, I stopped halfway, and pulled the string completely out. I have done the same with the others I own. Do you know how your bathing suit has a drawstring? You want the drawstring out, not in. It is uncomfortable, and annoying. It alters nothing when it is removed. I have a 32 waist, and their 32 is a 32. I found labelling the length as ‘Standard’ to be lazy. What is ‘Standard?’ If you are paying this much for a pair of shorts, don’t make me dig, say the length. I guess I like ‘Standard,’ because they are my go-to length. I measured a pair of mine, and they are 23cm (9”).

I think that should do it. I know they are pricey. It is not like I just drop this kind of money on a pair of shorts painlessly, but when I do, I am still wearing them years later, like it was the first time.
